Want to lead a sizeable engineering team without spending your life in Jira or losing touch with the technology altogether? We’re working with a global technology-led finance and investment organisation that’s building out a growing engineering function in Dublin. They’re looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to take ownership of a full-stack team working on a highly secure, business-critical platform used by institutional customers. This is very much an Engineering Manager rather than a Delivery Manager role. You won't be expected to spend your week writing production code, but you will need to have been a software engineer yourself. You should still be comfortable reviewing a PR, getting into an architecture conversation or sitting down with an engineer to work through a technical problem. The bigger part of the job is people.
What will you be doing?
You'll initially manage around 12 engineers, with the team expected to grow towards 16.
There's a real mix of experience within the team, from graduates and mid-level engineers through to Senior Engineers and Tech Leads.
You'll be responsible for coaching and developing engineers, running 1:1s and performance reviews, hiring as the team grows and helping people figure out where they want to take their careers.
Beyond the people side, you'll work closely with Product Managers, Architects, Tech Leads and other Engineering Managers to influence technical direction and engineering strategy.
The teams are encouraged to be relatively autonomous, so you're not being hired to sit in every stand-up or micromanage the sprint board. Instead, you'll help create an environment where the team can operate independently while representing them in wider conversations around architecture, new initiatives and product strategy.
What are they building?
You'll be joining a growing technology division working on enterprise-grade platforms for institutional digital assets.
The wider division is also considered an important growth area within the organisation, with continued investment expected as the product and customer base develops. That should create opportunities for people joining now to take on broader leadership responsibilities as the team grows.
What's the tech stack?
The team you're initially taking responsibility for is full-stack and works primarily with:
You'll also be working in an environment using microservices, CI/CD, test automation, containerisation and infrastructure-as-code.
You don't have to be a hands-on Java developer today. What matters is that you've got a strong software engineering foundation and enough technical depth to have credibility with experienced engineers.
Java/Spring experience would obviously be ideal, but the hiring manager is open to people coming from another strong backend ecosystem (such as .NET) if you can demonstrate that your experience transfers and you're comfortable working with Java engineering teams.
What are we looking for?
Your career has probably looked something like:
Software Engineer → Senior/Tech Lead → Team Lead → Engineering Manager
That's important.
We're not looking for someone who's moved into engineering management primarily through Scrum, project or delivery management. You'll need to understand software engineering because you've actually done it yourself. That's one of the biggest things the hiring manager will be looking for.
You'll ideally have:
Financial services experience is useful, but it isn't essential.
If you've led strong engineering teams in SaaS, ecommerce, technology, pharma or another complex engineering environment, the team is open to that. Technical credibility and your track record as an Engineering Manager matter considerably more than having worked in the same industry before.
What's in it for you?
The base salary is €80,000 – €85,000, alongside a 20% performance-related bonus.
There's also a really strong wider benefits package, including:
